How do I scan a disk to check for a virus?

Note: If you have a virus scanner installed and its "AutoProtect" functions are enabled (this is the default in the computer labs), then every time you access a file, the virus scanner quickly scans it for signs of a virus. However, this is a very brief scan, so if you suspect any file or disk of containing a virus, please use the manual method below.

To scan a disk for a virus using Trend Micro (the virus scanner in the School of Law computer labs), perform the following steps:

  1. Insert your disk, if applicable.
  2. Right-click the round, blue icon in your system tray (it should be next to the clock on your screen). Choose "OfficeScan Main".
  3. Check off the locations that you would like to scan (e.g., if your floppy drive, check off A).
  4. Press the Scan Drives button.

Note that Trend Micro, like any other virus scanner, is not guaranteed 100% effective. Always exercise caution when handling data, and back up your work repeatedly in different locations.
