Printing

What do I do if my job does not seem to be printing?

  • Below are some of the more common printing problems. Please run through this list before contacting Law Computing Support.
  • Note: The Westlaw and Lexis printers are maintained by the Westlaw and Lexis student representatives. If you are unable to find a Westlaw or Lexis student representative to help you with a printer problem, feel free to contact LCS and we will help you find them. If your Westlaw or Lexis-Nexis print job doesn't seem to be being sent to the printers at all, please contact Westlaw or Lexis using their hot-lines in the Westlaw and Lexis computer labs.
    1. Do you have enough printing credit? Check your printing credit balance on the top right hand corner of the LCS website. If you are out of credit, your jobs will not be accepted by the server. See "How do I request more printing credit?" in the Printing section of the LCS website.
    2. Is your job mixed in with another student's? Especially if your print job is only a few pages, carefully go through the documents sitting on and around the printer. Your print job may come out of any one of the three printers when you send it to the Matrix print queue.
    3. Are you printing from a disk? Many times, documents printing directly from a disk will not be printed correctly (due to the size of the file after the temp and working files have been generated). We recommend that you copy the file to your U drive, then print the document from there.
    4. Check to make sure all the printers are filled with paper. If they are empty, please contact Law Computing Support (or the Circulation Desk, if after hours). The paper trays can be damaged by inexperienced users, and we want to assist you.
    5. Under NO circumstances fill the printers with Westlaw or Lexis paper.
    6. Check to make sure that all the printers are online. You can check this by pressing the "GO" button, which toggles between "Offline" and "Ready." Make sure the display by the button says "Ready."
    7. Check to see if the display says there is a paper jam. If there is, contact Law Computing Support. If there is no one available (i.e., it is outside normal working hours), carefully open the various printer doors and check for jammed pieces of paper. Remove them carefully, as ripped paper will cause jams too.
    8. Does the printer display say anything about "Tray 1"? If so, someone has attempted to print on special, manual-fed paper and has locked the printer. (Special jobs, e.g., on resume paper, should be printed in Career Services, to avoid this problem.) Please press the Go button to force the job to print on regular paper. Your job should then follow.
    9. Note: It's OKAY if the printers report they are "paused"; that means they are waiting for new print jobs. The Matrix printer queues must be either "paused" or "printing" in order to be functioning properly.
    10. If none of these solutions works, contact Law Computing Support. If you choose to email us from the Contact Page, be sure to detail the problem, including what printer, what time, and what steps you have taken to try to fix it.
