How do I find out what version of Windows I have?

It's important to know what version of Windows you have in order to know which instructions to follow for installing hardware or software, or when troubleshooting your computer. Please follow one of sets of the instructions below to find out what version of Windows you have on your personal computer.

  1. Click your Start button. Your Windows version is often reported along the border of the Start menu (e.g., "Windows 98").
    OR
  1. Find your My Computer icon. If it is not on your desktop (the background), then look on your Start menu.
  2. Right-click the My Computer icon. A small menu will pop up.
  3. Choose Properties from the menu.
  4. Your Windows version should be printed near the top of the first screen that appears (under "System:").
    OR
  1. Click your Start button
  2. Click Run...
  3. Type in winver and press OK

  4. A box will popup stating your Windows version
