- How do I get protection on my computer from hackers?
The best way to protect and keep your information safe from hackers is downloading a program that can shield your computer from potential threats. Programs such as Spyware Blaster, Spybot, and SpySweeper have useful services.
- How much do these programs cost?
Most of the programs are free! They are apart of the shareware community and do accept donations if one pleases. However, some programs like SpySweeper that offer more services only have a free trial period for a limited time then charge you thereafter for continual use.

Besides turning off your pop-up blocker on your Internet Explorer, you can further protect your computer by downloading and installing "anti-adware" protection. Anti-adware shields your computer from pop-up ads.

- In addition to spyware protection, do I also need to
implement a firewall for my computer?
The Microsoft Windows XP built-in firewall is certainly adequate for normal use and installing additional commercial firewalls from Symantec or MacAfee is unnecessary and may cause more problems that it solves. The university maintains a robust firewall that covers the entire campus.
- But what if I live off campus?
If a student lives off campus, a hardware firewall is recommended. Very often home network routers also have hardware firewall features. The more popular brands all have adequate firewall functions in home network routers. A router with firewall features from Linksys, D-Link, or NetGear is a good investment. There are versions for wired and wireless networks.
